An OPINION of
Piscataqua Research

The FAS 87 Balance Sheet Shell Game

Our original business was the application of financial research to pension plan asset allocations.

In the process of designing asset allocations, Piscataqua Research developed a proprietary database of retirement information for corporations. That database is now managed by Futuremetrics. Over the years, our research has been featured in articles in such magazines as CFO and Pension and Investments Age.

Our research is now published at our leisure and is more a labor of love than a labor of profit. Feel free to access our research and to contact us about it. For paid research, we consult in conjunction with FutureMetrics.

Our most recent research piece is attached. It is a review of FASB 87 balance sheet accounting and shows how corporations might have identified new ways to manipulate this accounting rule. FAS 87 appears to erroneously allow corporations to consolidate related entities in a way that assets are counted twice.

FutureMetrics, LLC

FutureMetrics maintains an extensive database on corporate pension plans. The database contains deep information on over 1000 of the largest corporations with pension plans.

The information spans from 1986 to the present. We also provide unique analysis that reveals information about corporate plans and benchmark against a variety of criteria.

The information in the database is available for licensing in whole, to meet selected data needs, and as an internet-based corporate planning and oversight tool.
